Career Summary
Mike commenced study at the School of Earth Sciences at Macquarie University as he was particularly interested in the geomorphological processes taking place at beaches, rivers and mountains. This in turn lead to a broader interest in how the planet worked, and he completed his BSc degree majoring in Geology in 1984.
Mike began his geological career in the petroleum industry in 1985, working for a consultancy in North Sydney, interpreting seismic sections and wireline well logs, producing contour maps and wrestling with early computer plotting devices.
In 1987, he started work as a contractor in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields of Western Australia, working on numerous gold projects logging drill chips, with some field mapping. One of the companies Mike was contracting to (National Mine Management) offered him a role as a Mine Geologist in 1988, working on grade control, near-mine exploration, mine design and scheduling for some of the open cuts around the Mt Pleasant area, north of Kalgoorlie.
In 1991, Mike started work with Newcrest Mining at their New Celebration Gold Mine. He spent a few years as a Mine Geologist in the many varied open cuts Newcrest operated to the south of Kalgoorlie, and a year as an exploration geologist working on Newcrest’s extensive tenement package in the Kalgoorlie area. Mike then transferred with Newcrest to the Cadia Project in NSW in 1994, and was on the drill-out team that defined the Cadia Hill gold-copper deposit, and built on his resource modelling skills that he had been developing since his time at Mt Pleasant.
In 1996, Mike was offered the very challenging role as the Senior Mine Geologist at the Kookynie Project (Orient Well), a gold project 160km north of Kalgoorlie, with Melita Mining. Mike was responsible for all aspects of geology and grade control in a geologically diverse range of open cuts. Melita was then taken-over by Consolidated Gold, and Mike then moved to Consolidated’s Davyhurst Project, where he was the Senior Mine Geologist for the Lights of Israel underground gold mine. Mike was involved in stope design, reconciliation, development mapping and resource calculations.
In 1997, Mike was promoted to Chief Geologist for Consolidated Gold at Davyhurst, responsible for geological control in the open cuts and underground, near mine exploration and resource definition drilling, and resource estimation.
Mike then moved to New Hampton Goldfields in 1999 as the Senior Resource Geologist, where he was involved with resource modelling of numerous gold and nickel deposits (some of which were then acquired from other parties), and was a member of the team that worked on the acquisition of the Big Bell Gold Mine. Mike produced many of the resource estimate models for the Cuddingwarra area open cuts at Big Bell, and was active in the mining, grade control set-up and reconciliation of the Cuddingwarra pits. In 2001, New Hampton was taken-over by Harmony Gold of South Africa, and his role as a resource specialist was no longer required, so…
In 2001, Mike moved to WMC Resources as the Senior Resource Geologist at the Leinster Nickel Operation, where he produced resource estimates for a diverse range of styles of mineralisation in the Leinster area. Mike also provided training and advice for geological and mining staff at Leinster. In 2004, Mike was promoted to Geology Manager at Leinster, co-ordinating underground and open-cut mining geology, near-mine exploration and resource definition drilling, and resource estimates. Mike was also actively involved with other departments on issues of safety, risk management, contractor management and project scheduling. BHP Billiton acquired WMC in June 2005, with site-based staff transferring directly across. Mike was a key part of the management team at Leinster, and performed the role of Acting General Manager as required.
In June 2006, Mike returned to the consulting world, joining QG as a Principal Consultant. Mike still likes hanging around beaches, rivers and mountains.
